Ivan Doig Archive Launch - September 19, 2016
The Montana State University Library hosted the launch of the Ivan Doig Archive (https://ivandoig.montana.edu) on September 19, 2016 in the Strand Union Building on the Montana State University campus. Ivan Doig (1939-2015) was the critically acclaimed author of 16 works of fiction and nonfiction primarily set in Montana. The archive was awarded to Montana State University by Ivan’s widow, Carol Muller Doig, following a joint proposal submitted by the MSU Library and the MSU College of Letters & Science in fall 2015. President Waded Cruzado, Dean Kenning Arlitsch, and Dean Nicol Rae open the event, followed by the unveiling of the print and digital versions of the archive, which contains Ivan Doig’s original manuscripts, diaries, personal interviews, correspondence, notes, and memorabilia. It also features thousands of images including family albums, travel, and research photographs as well as documentation detailing the author’s battle with multiple myeloma. A panel discussion of Doig’s work, life, and his place in Montana’s literary and historical landscape follow the unveiling. This panel includes Carol Muller Doig, Marcella Sherfy Walter, a research historian who worked closely with the author, Betty Mayfield, Ivan Doig archivist, and Rick Bass, Writer-in-Residence in MSU’s College of Letters & Science and an award winning author. The panel is moderated by Dr. Mary Murphy, Montana historian and Distinguished Professor in the MSU College of Letters & Science.
